What is a margin call?

💡 Get a head start! Learn all about Margin Accounts before they go live. This feature isn't available yet, but we’re working hard for its big debut!

A maintenance margin call (Margin Call) occurs when the value of your portfolio falls below the required minimum maintenance level. In simple terms, it is an alert that the equity in your account is not sufficient to support your leveraged positions.

If you receive a Margin Call notification, you must increase the value of your portfolio. At Hapi, we aim to give you up to 3 days to deposit funds or sell assets to meet the requirement.

⚠️ Important: Please note that in volatile market conditions, Hapi reserves the right to partially or fully liquidate your assets immediately to cover the margin call without prior notice, in accordance with applicable regulations.

Key points to consider:

  • Cryptocurrencies: Your cryptocurrency positions are not considered margin collateral.

  • Restrictions: You will not be able to make new investments until the margin call has been resolved.

How to avoid a Margin Call

Preventing a Margin Call is essential for a healthy investment strategy. At Hapi, we recommend:

  1. Monitor your Margin Status: In the app, you can view your risk level in real time. Keeping this indicator at optimal levels is your best defense.

  2. Enable Notifications: We will send you in-app alerts when your margin buffer is low and a formal email if you fall below the maintenance requirement.

  3. Act Quickly: If you receive a warning, don’t wait. You have options to correct your situation, such as depositing funds or closing positions strategically.

How to resolve a margin call

If you are in a margin call, you have two main options to resolve it:

  • Make a deposit: Increase the net value of your portfolio above the maintenance margin.

  • Sell assets: You can sell positions (including those not purchased with margin or even cryptocurrencies) to free up capital and cover the required amount.
