The "My Investment" section on a bond's detail page shows the same fields as it does for a stock, but some of them read differently because a bond isn't the same as a stock.
What does each field mean?
Quantity: the number of bonds (units) you hold, not shares. Each bond has its own face value (commonly $1,000, though it can vary by issuer — check the specific face value in each bond's detail before investing). The quantity of bonds doesn't directly equal the dollar amount invested.
Market value: the result of multiplying the bond's current price by your quantity. Unlike a stock, a bond's price doesn't reflect a company's performance: it moves mainly with changes in interest rates and the issuer's credit risk, and it can trade above or below its face value.
Average cost: the average price at which you bought your bonds.
Amount invested: how much money you've put into this bond.
Total return: the unrealized gain or loss, in dollars and percentage, comparing the current market value against the amount invested.
📌 Important: the total return in this widget reflects only the bond's price change. It doesn't include coupons you've already collected, since those payments are received as separate cash and aren't part of the value of your bond position.
Example (hypothetical): you buy 25 bonds with a face value of $1,000 each. Your average purchase cost was 96.5% of face value, so your average cost in dollars is $965 per bond and your amount invested is $24,125. If the bond's current price rises to 99% of face value, your market value would be $24,750 — a total return of +$625 (2.59%). This example is illustrative only and doesn't represent an investment recommendation or the actual performance of any bond.
